MAKE SURE YOU COUNT!!
Now, more than ever, the City of Hazel Park needs your help to spread the word. We are officially preparing for the 2020 US Decennial Census which is a big deal!
In March of 2020, each household/resident will receive BY MAIL-a postcard to participate in the 2020 Census. Responding to the census will be easier than ever, and for the FIRST TIME you can respond online. You may also complete the survey by phone.
What is the Census?
The U.S. census counts every resident in the United States, but it is much more than just a head count. Our nation gets one chance each decade to count its population. Our nation’s founders believed this data was so important that they mandated the decennial census in the Constitution. The 2020 Census will mark the 24th time that the country has counted its population since 1790.
In the year 2000, The City of Hazel Parks participation or “turn in” rate was at 85%. In 2010, it dropped to 73%. We can strive for a better turn in rate for the year 2020 by helping to increase participation from those who are less likely to respond or are often missed. Special Housing groups, faith-based institutions, schools, businesses, non-profit organizations and all community organizations are encouraged to PLEASE SHARE THIS POST!
Why complete your census form? When you submit your survey, you help your community get its fair share of the more than $675 billion per year disbursed in federal funds to each state. This count affects the allocation of funding for our community’s public resources (e.g., roads, hospitals, schools), how we plan for the future, and our voice in government. In addition, the census helps determine how many representatives each state gets in Congress. These are just a few reasons why an accurate count is so important.
The answers you provide are used only to produce statistics. You are kept anonymous. The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly release your responses in any way that could identify you or anyone else in your home.
