City Attorney Melissa Schwartz
Hazel Park City Attorney and Prosecutor, Melissa A. Schwartz, J.D., graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Ms. Schwartz was elected and served as Class President, Academic and Scholarship Committee Chairperson, and she created an outline resource bank which allowed all students access to free study guides and outlines. Ms. Schwartz received the Dean’s Book Award for her citizenship. Ms. Schwartz clerked for the Hon. Bernard A. Friedman, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan; served as a Wayne County Crime Victim Advocate; and she has training as a general civil mediator.
She is a member of the Michigan State Bar; Oakland County Bar Association; Detroit Bar Association; Macomb County Bar Association; Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys; Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan; and the Federal Bar Association. Prior to her appointment as the Hazel Park City Attorney and Prosecutor, Ms. Schwartz was the managing attorney of Your Legal Service, PLLC in Southfield, Michigan. Ms. Schwartz has received numerous awards including the Best of the Best Family Law Attorney; Lawyers of Distinction; Top Attorneys; and, most recently, she was voted as the Royal Oak Daily Tribune Reader’s Choice First Place for Best of the Best Attorney.
The City Attorney’s office represents the city in all legal matters and acts as advisor to the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, City employees and all boards and commissions. As Prosecutor, Ms. Schwartz handles prosecutions of city ordinance violations and misdemeanors adopted under the municipal code.
