The Planning Division staff is charged with speaking with prospective business owners about what types of businesses are permitted and where they are permitted; reviewing applications for new developments; and administering grants and loans that develop recreational facilities and that assist residents in improving and maintaining their homes and property.

The Building & Planning Department work together in speaking with residents and businesses about any building expansion or improvements that the property owners wish to do; and suggesting changes in the City's policies and laws that will make development easier and more desirable.

The Planning Department works with a number of appointed boards and commissions such as the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Downtown Development Authority. These residential boards are part of the checks and balances in local government. They ensure that continuity is maintained.

If you are a property owner wishing to expand in Hazel Park or a business thinking of moving to Hazel Park, please call the Community Development Department. The staff is here to help you through the City approval process.
