PED News and Issues

PED NEWS & ISSUES

The Planning and Economic Development Department is here to guide and promote the physical and economic development of the City of Hazel Park. Our goal is to provide leadership, policies and programs that will promote strong, vibrant neighborhoods and communities, and to proactively encourage the positive and orderly growth and development of the City. PED advocates incorporation of the diverse interests of our community to reduce barriers and enhance leadership capacity to continue to improve the quality of life for all who live, work and play here. Another focus is to facilitate the creation and retention of jobs and new investment within the City in order to expand the City’s tax base.

Please look for announcements on new businesses locating in Hazel Park, such as Cellarmen's Brewery, located at the old Bolyard's lumber building, and Great Lakes Burger, located at the old Big Boy/Coney Cravers.  We will also be highlighting the dynamic businesses already operating in our community.

COLLABORATION WITH WAYNE STATE DEPARTMENT OF URBAN STUDIES AND PLANNING (DUSP)

Beginning May 5th, 2014, Wayne State's DUSP program will begin working on their Capstone Project, which, among other things, will focus on corridor plans for John R and Nine Mile.  The Capstone Project is a culmination of the Master's Program in Urban Planning.  The class of 15 will prepare data, maps and present recommendations to the City in a presentation and written report at the beginning of August.  The work of these students will greatly assist in the completion of Hazel Park's Master Plan.  We are excited to continue a longstanding relationship with Wayne State's DUSP program and look forward to their involvement in our Master Plan process.
