Utilizing three vacant lots, the City of Hazel Park repurposed the land to start a community garden across from Ford School at the southeast corner of Merrill and Elza. In 2013, the City received a grant from the Ford Foundation in partnership with Wayne State University that provides funding for garden equipment. The garden is administered by students from Wayne State's Department of Urban Studies and Planning Program. The City and Wayne State have a long history of collaboration and partnership. After a very successful first year, the garden is seeking additional volunteers to help with the growing and harvesting of various vegetables. The garden will provide nutritional food to the garden volunteers and other members of the public.
