The Building Department works with a number of appointed boards and commissions including the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Downtown Development Authority. These residential boards are part of the checks and balances of local government, and exist to ensure community-wide continuity.
HPMC 12.04.035 Removal of Snow and Ice from Sidewalks Required
The occupant of any premises, or the owner of any unoccupied premises, is required to keep the sidewalks in front of or adjacent to such premises cleared, so far as is practicable and reasonable, from snow and ice to facilitate pedestrian use. Where there are no sidewalks, the occupant or owner shall clear a path free from snow and ice where a sidewalk would otherwise be, to facilitate pedestrian use. Whenever any snow or ice has fallen or accumulated, it shall be cleared within twenty-four (24) hours after it has fallen or accumulated.
Nuisance Hearings are held on Wednesdays as deemed necessary, each month, at 3:00 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room, or as stated otherwise. Guidelines for Nuisance hearings can be found in Section 8 of the Hazel Park City Ordinances.
The Building Department also handles Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) cases. The ZBA meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. The ZBA meets to determine if a variance should be granted. A variance is a relaxation of an ordinance when either a practical difficulty or undue hardship is proven.
