Boards & Commissions


Boards and commissions play a vital role in municipal government. Special thanks to the many dedicated and talented individuals who volunteer their time by serving on the numerous City boards and commissions.

The following is a list of committees and a brief description of their responsibilities. For those interested in serving on a board or commission, applications are available online or at the City Clerk's Office. Completed applications should be turned into said office.

Arts Council works to improve the city image through the development and implementation of art 
Board of Review 
hears tax assessment appeals
Brownfield Redevelopment Authority redevelopment of former contaminated sites
Charter & Code recommends charter review changes
City Council (elected position, Mayor and Four Council Members)
Civil Service enforces personnel and disciplinary matters for Police & Fire
Code Commission provides a means of appeal to Michigan Residential & Building Codes
Downtown Development Authority encourages development and redevelopment of the downtown business district
Eight Mile Blvd Association promotes economic development and enhancement of the Eight Mile corridor
Elected Officials Compensation
establishes salaries and expenses for all elected officials
Election Commission oversees all elections per election law and approves appointments for precinct workers (per Charter)
General Building Authority serves as a financial mechanism to acquire and build any municipal facility
Historic Commission prepares and keeps historical city data and inventory
Library Board establishes policy for Library operations (elected position)
Memorial Weekend Committee oversees Memorial Weekend festival activities
Mobile Communications Service Unit (MCSU) (voluntary membership under the supervision of HPPD)
Parks and Recreation reviews recreational needs of City projects and facilities
Neighborhood Enrichment recommends and works towards city improvement and beautification
Planning Commission prepares comprehensive plan for City; changes to zoning ordinance and plat modifications
Receiving Board responsible for monitoring precinct activities and securing election materials for each city election
Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority SOCRRA (Representative & Alternate appointed by City Council)
Youth Assistance strengthens youth and families reducing incidence of delinquency through volunteer involvement
Zoning Board of Appeals review appeals from property owners
