Water Department Informational Items

Water Consumption:

On average, each American uses (60) sixty gallons of water every day. You can reduce your water usage if you are efficient.

WATER WASTED AT 60 psi WATER PRESSURE.

A continuous leak from a hole this size would waste these amounts of water.

Diameter of stream Daily average of gallons Gallons per month
1/4 inch 13,127 393,810
3/16 inch 7,400 222,000
1/8 inch 3,289 98,670
1/16 inch 822 24,660

Tips for saving water:

A household faucet runs at 3 to 5 gallons a minute. Avoid waste turn faucets off firmly.
Check appliances connecting hoses and faucets for leaks. Even a pinhole leak wastes up to 170 gallons a day.
Test your toilet for leaks. Add several drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If it’s leaking, coloring will appear in the toilet without flushing.
Avoid using the toilet for a wastebasket. Every flush you eliminate can save between 2 and 7 gallons of water. Install a water-efficient toilet if possible.
Short showers save water. Install a low-flow showerhead and keep showers under 5 minutes.
Cool drinking water in refrigerator or with ice, not by running tap.
Water yards wisely. Minimize evaporation by watering in early morning or evening.
Cover pools and spas to reduce evaporation. Avoid overflows and splashes by reducing water levels.

Frozen pipes:

Never leave water pipes and/or water meter in an unheated area. This could cause damage to the water meter and your plumbing. Resulting in high water bills and fees.

Water Quality:

The City of Hazel Park is required to deliver to ever house and business a Consumer Confidence Water Quality Report ever year. Last year, as in all previous years your tap water has met and/or surpassed all drinking water health standards required by the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.), as well as the State of Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. A copy of this report is also available at the Water Department.

Service Calls:

Call the Water Department if you have received an unusually High or Low water bill. We will set an appointment for a service person to check for leaks and/ or stopped meters.
Please call the Water Department if you notice water leaking up from streets, sidewalks, grass areas or fire hydrants. So we can make repairs to water mains, service leaks, gate wells and fire hydrants as soon as possible.

Water Billing Procedures:

Residents are sent a blue water bill every (3) three months. Commercial accounts are sent every month. The bill is for charges incurred in the last billing period and will also show any previous balance. The due date is approximately 25 days after the bill is mailed out.
Residents are then sent a green bill (past due notice) about (7) seven days after the original bill is due.
Approximately (7) seven to (10) ten days later, a red bill (shut-off notice) is sent if the bill is still not paid. The red bill shows a date by which the bill must be paid or the water service will be shut-off.
There is a mail drop-box in the City Hall parking lot for after hours.
If for some reason the resident cannot pay the water bill, they must come to the Water Department and sign a Partial Payment Agreement (P.P.A.) Call Water Department for details.

Turn on policy:

Once the water has been shut-off for non-payment, the resident must come to the Water Department and sign a turn-on form. This form will show that a $50.00 turn-on fee will be charged on the next regular bill. Sewer Department Informational Items.

Operation and maintenance:

The Sewer Department cleans the sanitary and combined sewer lines on a daily basis, weather permitting. Excluding the months of January and February.

Storm Sewers:

The Sewer Department cleans our catch basins bi-annually and on an as needed basis. If you should notice standing water in the streets, please call our Sewer Department so we can determine and repair the problem.

Sewage Backup Complaints:

If any resident or business should experience a sewage backup of any type, we recommend calling our Sewer Department. We can then come out and determine if the problem is within our sewer system or advise the citizen of our opinion of where the problem may exist.

Public Act 222:

This State Law provides procedures that need to be followed in the event of a sewage overflow or backup on your property. Any citizen having experienced an overflow or backup of a sewage disposal system or storm water system, must file a written claim with The City of Hazel Park within 45 days after the overflow or backup is discovered.A claim form may be obtained by calling the City Clerk at 248-546-4064. Describing your problem and requesting a claim form.
