The Planning Department staff responsibilities include speaking with prospective business owners about what types of businesses are permitted within the City and where they are permitted, reviewing site plan applications for new developments, administering grants and loans that aid development within our City, and assisting residents in improving and maintaining their homes, property, and personal well-being.

The Planning Department will directly speak with business owners when they have an interest in creating additional floor space to a building, adding an additional use to the property, adding or decreasing parking, or adding an accessory building structure. The above process will require site plan approval by the Planning Commission. The site plan review applications may be picked up at the Planning Department. The Planning Department also oversees rezoning and special use approval requests. These applications may also be picked up at the Planning Department.

The Planning Department directly oversees the administering of the Community Development Block Grant funds. These funds currently have been allocated to assist residents with emergency home repairs and specific property code violation repairs. The Planning Department can also refer residents to other available grant and loan monies that can assist them with their home repairs or subsidized housing needs.

The Planning Department works directly with several appointed boards and commissions such as the Planning Commission, Downtown Development Authority, and Historical Commission. These residential boards are vital part of the checks and balances in local government and ensure that continuity is maintained.

If you are resident seeking personal assistance, a business owner wishing to move into Hazel Park, or a developer wishing to build a new commercial structure within our City, please call the Planning Department. The staff will gladly assist and guide you through the application process.
