The Building Department staff is charged with reviewing building plans and permits for building, electrical, fences, mechanical, plumbing, right of ways and signs to ensure that they adhere to the building and zoning laws. Nuisances per se hearings are held the first Monday of every month at 4:00 p.m. in the Quiet Room of the Hazel Park Library. The ZBA meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. A variance provides a relaxation of the ordinance when the Board determines that either a practical difficulty or an undue hardship has been proven. The Building Department works with a number of appointed boards and commissions such as the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Downtown Development Authority.
