The Building Department works with a number of appointed boards and commissions including the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Downtown Development Authority.  These residential boards are part of the checks and balances of local government, and exist to ensure community-wide continuity.

Nuisance Hearings are held the first Monday of every month at 4:00 p.m. in the Quiet Room of the Hazel Park Library.  Guidelines for Nuisance hearings can be found in Section 8 of the Hazel Park City Ordinances (LINK).

The Building Department also handles Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) cases.  The ZBA meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.  The ZBA meets to determine if a variance should be granted. A variance is a relaxation of an ordinance when either a practical difficulty or undue hardship is proven.
